Descubriendo la música independiente de Corea del Sur.
Generalmente hablando, la música independiente a nivel internacional no solo proviene de 2 países. Por lo general las bandas que saltan a la fama pertenecen a UK y US, pero ahora existe un desarrollo importante de bandas con conceptos interesantes alrededor del mundo y para ser precisa en Corea del Sur. Para relatar como descubrí este "género" debo explicar mi experiencia personal.Not many years ago, countries from Latin America like Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile, Peru and even more, have helped to expand the boom of Korean dramas over the region as well as the music. I gave myself the task to investigate about its music called “OST” and when I finally did, I found an endless list of bands with soft indie music -which I personally prefer- to love.
No hace muchos años algunos países latinoamericanos como Venezuela, Colombia,Guatemala, México, Chile, Perú y algunos mas, ayudaron a expandir la popularidad de los dramas coreanos en la región y por ende su música. Me di a la tarea de investigar sobre su banda sonora o música de fondo llamada "OST" y al hacerlo descubrí un sin fin de bandas con sonido suave que por elección personal me encantan.
Obviously you cannot stop by and hear at least one song of k-pop, the main genre commercially talking. Talking about K-pop, it’s the mainstream market in South Korea which is full of “idols” of all ages, from young “trainers” to veterans from the 90´s pop boom who refuses to retire. Their style, even though it´s too “happy” to me, for example “오빠(Oppa) give me love”, “I´m pretty 뿌잉 뿌잉(ppuing ppuing)” you cannot avoid surprising yourself by singing parts of the chorus of one of these songs. The songs are very catchy and it makes you happy and sometimes it makes you want to dance.
Obviamente no puedes pasar por alto toparte con una canción de Kpop, el género más importante comercialmente hablando. Hablar de Kpop es hablar del principal mercado en el cual tienen un catálogo lleno de "idols" de todas edades, desde nuevos "trainers" hasta veteranos del boom de los 90 que se niegan a retirarse. Su estilo es demasiado... ¿cómo decirlo?... "happy" para mi, con expresiones como; "oppa dame amor", "soy bonito puing puing". Sin embargo no puedes evitar caer y tararear algún coro "catchy" de alguna canción de toda la ola hallyu. Y es en serio que te ponen de buen humor.
But let´s talk about those bands that do not have massive commercial support at the moment, but they have such overflowing talent by just playing a guitar or singing a capella. Sadly there are many unknown bands from genres like Rock, Jazz, Acoustic, Ska, Metal, etc. But as I mentioned before, I prefer those bands with soft sound, better known as “coffee shop sound”. Here’s my personal top five favorite of K-indie bands:
Pero hablemos de las bandas que no tienen apoyo comercial masivo y que tienen talento que desborda al solo tocar la guitarra o cantar a cappella. Lamentablemente existen bandas que no son conocidas de todos los géneros; Rock, jazz, acústicas, ska, metal, etc. Como dije, mi elección fueron esas bandas con sonido suave o como las encasillan de estilo coffeeshop. Aquí top 5 personal de las bandas que me gustan:
넬 Nell
I must emphasize, this is my favorite band. I love them because of their lyrics and music but especially because of Kim JongWan´s voice. Nell is a four member band consisting of Kim JongWan (vocalist), Lee JaeKyung (lead guitarist), Lee JungHoon (bassist) and Jung JaeWon (drummer) that formed in the late 90´s and since then, they haven´t stopped making albums of high musical quality. After a long break and their compulsory military enlistment, they returned in 2012 with the album “Slip Away” – a really amazing album to be honest. Nell’s music is depressing and melancholic most of the time. Their music makes you to want to sing at least the English lines on the songs’ lyrics. There is too much to say about this band, but too little lines for this article. Give them a listen; they are truly amazing.Esta banda de cuatro integrantes formada por Kim Jong Wan (vocalista), Lee Jae Kyung (guitarra), Lee Jung Hoon (bajista) y Jung Jae Won (batería) se formó a finales de los 90´s y no han parado de hacer discos con tan buena calidad. Tras un largo receso y después del servicio militar obligatorio de los integrantes, regresaron a principios del 2012 con el álbum "Slip Away", un gran album. Tienen un estilo rock muchas veces suave-deprimente-melancólico que hace que, si no sabes coreano, cantes aunque sea las frases en ingles que tienen en la mayoría de las canciones. Hay tanto que decir de ellos y tan poco espacio en este artículo que solo digo: Escúchenlos, son grandiosos. -Debo resaltar que es mi banda favorita, los amo por sus letras, su música y la hermosa voz de su vocal Kim Jong Wan.-
노리플라이 No Reply
This talented duo from Hongdae was formed by Kwon Soon Kwan (vocalist and keyboard) and Jeong Wook Jae (guitarist). This group shows us mature lyrics with soft music. Both members are environmental and social causes activists. They haven´t been able to promote like a normal band but their work keeps them in the musical scene. They also have their own solo projects; Wook Jae has his solo called TUNE but in the mean time he is in the army. Soon Kwan is about to release his first solo album “A door”(can´t wait) as Moment.
Este dúo talentoso salido del barrio de Hongdae está formado por Kwon Soon Kwan y Jeong Wook Jae. Muestra letras maduras pero con sonido suave. Los dos son activistas del medio ambiente y causas sociales y aunque no han hecho promoción tienen un lugar asegurado en el medio. Los dos tienen proyectos por separado; mientras Jeong Wook Jae está sirviendo al ejercito coreano Kwon Soon Kwan está por lanzar su primer disco como solista bajo su proyecto en solitario; Moment. -Y estoy que muero de ansias.-
몽니 Monni
This band definitely gave fresh air to my music library. They are 3 male members; Kim Shin Ee (vocalist), Gong Tae Woo (guitarist), Young Hoon Tae (drummer) and a female member Lee In Kyung (bassist). How great! A girl in the band! She isn´t the main vocalist but she does back vocals and has done some songs. On the other hand Shin Ee, the main vocalist, has a beautiful voice. He can sing high notes without breaking his voice. His voice is so beautiful. The band has a rock style without becoming so strident in the most of their songs.
Esta banda le dio a mi biblioteca musical un poco de aire fresco. Son tres integrantes masculinos; Kim Shin Ee (vocalista), Gong Tae Woo (guitarrista), Young Hoon Tae (batería) y entre ellos una chica Lee In Kyung (bajo). -Wow que genial!- Ella no es la voz principal pero hace coros y canta algunas canciones. Por otra parte la voz del vocalista es tan particular y tan apreciable; él puede cantar notas altas sin romperse. Tienen un estilo rock sin llegar a ser estridente en la mayoría de sus canciones.

Another great duo that I’ve come to love. Their music is a mix of that coffee shop music which I have mentioned before with a twist of folk and bright but sometimes melancholic lyrics. The band is formed by Yoon Cheol Jong (guitarist) and Kwon Jung Yeol (vocalist & djembe). They have collaborated in many digital singles and compilation albums of indie artists for their music label and other labels. The most well known song of this duo is definitely “Americano” as a result of the successful advertising for “A Cafe La”.
Otro dúo al que amo. Su música expresa una mezcla de folk, letras felices pero melancólicas en algunas ocasiones. Su estructura se compone de la guitarra de Yoon Cheol Jong y la voz y jembe de Kwon Jung Yeol. Han colaborado en muchos singles para discos de recopilaciones de artistas independientes de su empresa y otras mas. La canción por la que mas se les conoce es "Americano" por su exitosa propaganda para "A Cafe La".
스탠딩 에그 Standing Egg
Standing Egg is a trio (or used to be) formed by Clover, Hanna and Han Kyul better known as Egg1, Egg2 and Egg3. The songs full of love and tenderness were wrote and composed mainly by Clover and Han Kyul; the melodies are enjoyable like a good cup of coffee. In fact their song “Kiss” was the song that introduced me into this world full of excellent bands and even today it is my favorite song from this band. At the moment eggfans (as are called the fans of this band) don’t know if Clover will be back someday with Standing Egg since he has already released a solo album using his own name and if Hank Kyul will do the same after his military service.
Standing Egg es(o solía ser) un trío conformado por Clover, Hanna y Han Kyul mejor conocidos como Egg1, Egg2 y Egg3. Sus canciones tiernas y llenas de amor principalmente creadas por Clover y Han Kyul con melodías tan disfrutables como una taza de buen café. De hecho su canción "Kiss" fue la que me introdujo a este maravilloso mundo de excelentes bandas y aún hoy en día es mi favorita de esta banda. Por el momento los eggfans (como se hacen llamar los seguidores de esta banda) no sabemos si Clover regresará con ellos ya que acaba de lanzar su disco como solista y con otro nombre, su nombre personal, y si también lo hará Han Kyul que esta en su servicio militar.
I should clarify all these bands belong into a music label and are not completely independent but the labels MintPaper, Soundholic, Woolliment, Happy Robot Records even another labels like Amoeba Culture, Ruby Salon, Soundholic and FLUXUS music support them and do not limit their creativity. That is great, huh?
Debo aclarar que estas bandas pertenecen a un sello discográfico y no son totalmente independientes, pero las discográficas Mintpaper, Soundholic,Woolliment, Happy Robot Records incluso otros sellos como Amoeba Culture, Ruby Salon y FLUXUS Music apoyan a sus artistas y no les ponen limites creativos. Eso es bueno ¿no?
